David Welker is back with a double bill of a release!
Per David:
“I always love to get a call from the Phish Art Department. This year the task was pertaining to a three weekend residency at the storied Sphere in Las Vegas. Almost instantaneously I decided that Vegas would now be an Off World Colony and Phish was the all time headliner the likes of an outer space Wayne Newton. Developed from a graphite drawing and adapted into a teeming conduit for interstellar luck of all sorts, it ultimately became a 7 color screen print deftly handled by the Wizards at The Half & Half.
During this residency Phish also did a wonderful homage to my 1993 Rift painting with a monumental dragonfly pan through the imagery, from the Maze, up and over the Bed and into and through the Mirror. When I think of the 33 years since I painted this piece on Lafayette Street in Manhattan, the band members flying in from Nashville to see it in person, and seeing it now reimagined as big as a digital Mount Rushmore, I am humbled, astonished and filled with gratitude for what this band has meant to me and so many others.
Finally, a little extra fun for this release, I decided to create a companion piece that was inspired by the bands Maze performance on the second weekend. The title is “A Modern Theseus” and it portrays two of my perennial characters visiting the Sphere and calling forth the Ghost of the Minotaur who has decided that he doesn’t want to get out of this Maze. This is a 12×12″ screen print, separated by SEP-LAB and printed by DL, in an edition of 300 signed and numbered pieces.”
